Overview
Corpse Moths are large black moths reported in the Lost Forest. They are drawn to human remains, and their wings carry spores capable of producing vivid hallucinations.
They form part of a Node where visibility, sound, and memory are already unreliable. Their presence introduces an additional danger around the dead: a traveler may encounter a threat to perception without facing a large predator.
Hallucinogenic Spores
Reported hallucinations include fire, falling, flight, and the sensation of being buried alive. These experiences can make it difficult to distinguish the surrounding forest from what the affected person perceives.
The moths' attraction to remains is established, but it does not explain whether their spores serve a defensive purpose, aid feeding, or have another function. Their full life cycle and the precise conditions required for exposure remain unknown.
Encounter Considerations
The Lost Forest's survival guidance advises travelers not to sleep near bone circles, dead animals, or moth activity. A site containing remains should therefore be assessed before it is treated as a place to rest.
No universal exposure duration, recovery period, or confirmed treatment has been established. Corpse Moths should be recorded separately from the forest's other illusions, even when their effects are difficult to distinguish during an encounter.
