Overview
Steam Power Police are mechanical enforcers operating in 1888 London. Steam cores and pressure systems power their bodies, while rigid directives govern their patrols and responses.
They seek to restore order, detain threats, and eliminate violent resistance. Their presence makes the city's streets dangerous in a different way from its predators: a traveler's visible equipment and actions can determine how a patrol responds.
Enforcement Patterns
Unarmed travelers may receive warnings or be escorted away. Armed travelers are detained and taken toward Scotland Yard. Hostile resistance is treated as a capital threat.
The Police cannot be reasoned with in the ordinary sense, although they may obey particular legal patterns. Recognizing a pattern does not establish a complete understanding of the laws they enforce.
Scotland Yard
Scotland Yard remains operational despite the absence of an apparent living government controlling it. Ticking machinery, steam pressure systems, holding cells, and uniformed mechanical enforcers fill the building.
The relationship between the station, individual patrols, and the Node's continuing enforcement remains unresolved.
Encounter Considerations
The city's survival guidance advises avoiding visible weapons near patrols unless prepared for detention. A warning should be assessed as part of an active enforcement process rather than treated as proof that the patrol is harmless.
No universal exemption, override, or safe release procedure has been established.
Current Understanding
Their patrols form part of the phenomenon described as Clockwork Law. The authority behind their directives is unknown, and continued mechanical operation does not establish that the city's original government survives.
