Overview
Amara Kurosawa is an Umbra Aries operative of the Office of Infinite Horizon. She specializes in recruitment, negotiation, intelligence gathering, and firearms, supported by magic centered on trickery.
Controlled, calculating, and ambitious, Amara takes her responsibilities seriously. Her skill at influencing others serves an organization working to prevent the destruction of every Node, while her growing doubts about its methods test the loyalty she has built her career around.
Background and Service
Amara grew up in a wealthy family with a tradition of government service. Duty, loyalty, and public responsibility were important parts of her upbringing, providing a foundation for the dedication she later brought to the Office.
Her intelligence and aptitude for strategy helped her establish herself as a capable operative. Demanding training and increasingly important assignments reinforced her reputation for efficiency and determination.
Amara has been willing to carry out morally ambiguous work because she believes the Office's purpose matters. Her commitment to that purpose shapes both her professional ambition and the sacrifices she makes in her personal life.
Appearance
Amara has a slender build, sharp features, and black hair styled in a sleek bob. She wears yellow contact lenses to change her eye color.
Her professional clothing includes a tailored black suit, a white blouse, a fur overcoat, and glasses with transition lenses. A concealed detective-style holster forms part of her equipment.
Her composed presentation suits work in which a conversation, an introduction, or a carefully judged first impression can matter as much as a weapon.
Recruitment and Negotiation
Recruitment is one of Amara's specialties. The Office identifies and approaches potential members rather than accepting applications, placing the initiative with operatives who must assess a candidate and decide how to approach them.
Amara is practiced at persuasion, negotiation, and the careful presentation of information. Her confidence and calculating manner help her pursue an objective while controlling how much of her own position she reveals.
Her manipulative tendencies can complicate those encounters. She may become so focused on securing an outcome that she gives too little weight to another person's needs or misjudges their motives.
Intelligence, Firearms, and Magic
Amara gathers intelligence and uses it to prepare her approach to people and situations. Observation, strategy, and negotiation form the center of her professional skill set.
Firearms provide a direct option when an encounter becomes dangerous. She also uses magic focused on trickery, supporting the deceptive and indirect aspects of her work.
As an Umbra Aries, she belongs to a race known for darkvision, shadow blending, and resistance to enchantment, illusion, and mental manipulation. Those traits support her work around deception without making her judgment infallible. The wider rules of magical practice are described in Magic and Mana.
Personality and Personal Cost
Amara is cunning, confident, and difficult to read. She can be ruthless in pursuing a mission, and her desire for efficiency sometimes causes her to overlook details or disregard needs outside her immediate objective.
Trust is difficult for her. She keeps others at a distance and devotes so much attention to her work that personal relationships and interests receive little room. Professional success has come alongside increasing isolation.
Loyalty and Doubt
Amara sees the Office as a necessary force and wants her work to advance its mission. Her ambition and sense of duty have helped sustain that commitment through difficult assignments.
Over time, she begins questioning the morality of the Office's actions and whether her loyalty has been misplaced. The organization she has served so effectively becomes something she must judge for herself.
