The Office of Infinite Horizon

A secret newspaper-printing Anomaly guides an intelligence organization seeking to prevent the loss of every Node

Overview

The Office of Infinite Horizon is an intelligence organization working to prevent the extinction of life within Postremo Limine. Its work centers on Daily Fate Press, a secret Anomaly in the form of a large, movable printing press that produces newspapers containing glimpses of possible futures.

One of those futures shows every Node being wiped out. The world can replace its Nodes after their number reaches zero, but the people living within them cannot survive that interruption. The Office's goal is to stop that future from occurring.

The Extinction Future

Postremo Limine's ability to replace its Nodes does not ensure the survival of their inhabitants. For life to continue, at least one Node must remain. A world that begins producing replacements after reaching zero has already lost the continuity the Office seeks to protect.

This gives the organization a different measure of success from the world's own persistence. Its concern is the survival of those who live within Postremo Limine, and its operations aim to prevent the complete loss of the places that sustain them.

Daily Fate Press

At the start of each day, Daily Fate Press prints multiple different newspapers. Each has its own biased opinions, shaped by the style of newspaper it produces. The Office receives several presentations of future events rather than a single neutral account.

The press is an Anomaly that can be moved. Knowledge of it is restricted to members of the organization. Its existence and the source of the Office's predictions are kept within that membership.

Reporting and Interpretation

The current newspapers present an immediate problem of interpretation. Their reporting comes through the priorities, opinions, and framing of their respective publications. Understanding a printed account requires attention to the perspective through which it is being presented.

Previous editions can become potentially inaccurate. An older newspaper therefore cannot be assumed to remain a dependable account of what will happen. The distinction between a current report and an earlier prediction matters to how the Office uses its information.

The Newspaper Archive

The Office stores all previous newspapers. Its archive preserves earlier editions even when their predictions may no longer be accurate.

These stored papers remain records of what the press printed on previous days. Keeping them preserves the history of the Office's forecasts alongside the current editions on which its members must exercise their judgment.

Intelligence and Field Operations

The Office combines intelligence work with action in the field. Its operations include investigating predictions, intervening in developing threats, protecting endangered Nodes, and organizing evacuations.

Protecting inhabitants can require both defending the places where they live and helping them reach another refuge. Safe Zones and the conditions governing travel between Nodes form part of the wider setting in which those operations take place.

The organization may outsource tasks when needed. Outside assistance does not extend knowledge of the press beyond its members; the source of its foresight remains an internal secret.

Recruitment

The Office seeks out its own recruits. Potential members are identified and approached by the organization rather than entering through an application process.

Recruitment is therefore initiated by the Office. The decision to approach someone belongs to the organization, whose work depends on bringing people into its intelligence and operational activities.

Leadership and Departments

An overseeing director leads the Office of Infinite Horizon. Leaders of departments serve beneath that director and manage their respective areas of responsibility.

This hierarchy gives the organization central leadership and departmental management across its work. Its intelligence, archived newspapers, and field operations all serve the same objective: preventing the loss of every Node and the extinction that would follow for the world's inhabitants.

Known Members

Suzu is a young human illusionist and member of the Office. She uses bell-based illusions whose size is limited, alongside daggers and throwing daggers. An unidentified Office member saved her from execution after she failed an assassination attempt against that same person.

Nari is a Rattarian Rune Gear researcher and member of the Office. Formerly a high-tier researcher in Riseholm, she pursued magic capable of affecting or controlling Rune Gear Technology. Her equipment includes a contact-based hacking glove and a leather traveling case with expanded storage.

Amara Kurosawa is an Umbra Aries operative specializing in recruitment, negotiation, intelligence gathering, and firearms, supported by magic centered on trickery. Her calculating manner and commitment to the Office coexist with growing doubts about its methods.
