Profile
She shouts her name before battle.
Not as arrogance.
As ritual.
Mary Light is the Holy Order’s burning shield: a radiant defender blessed with the ability to bend light around herself, her allies, and the battlefield itself. Projectiles curve away from her. Enemies lose their aim. Attention bends toward her like gravity.
To the Order, Mary is a living symbol of protection: loud, fearless, and impossible to ignore. To Iris, she is something simpler and far more important.
She is safe.
Mary believes she was chosen by the Maiden to guard those who cannot protect themselves. Chief among them is Iris, whom she protects without hesitation, permission, or concern for command hierarchy.
Her overconfidence is legendary.
Her shield is stronger.
Appearance
Mary wears radiant-white armor lined with gold-seared trim, built to draw the eye as much as withstand damage. A massive circular shield rests across her back when not in use, polished bright enough to catch light even in dim corridors.
Her eyes gleam like refracted halos, especially when her aura is active. Her short-cropped hair is swept back by motion, heat, or faith, giving her the look of someone always charging into the next impact.
She carries a modified submachine weapon, a light-bending flash array, and her trusted shield. Her equipment is practical, but every piece carries the visual language of the Holy Order of the Divine Light.
Personality
Proud. Loud. Knight to a fault.
Mary Light is the kind of person who throws herself into fire if she believes someone she loves is standing on the other side. Her faith is unshakable, her declarations are dramatic, and her attitude is divisive even among allies.
She thrives on attention, not because she needs praise, but because being noticed means someone more fragile is not.
Mary’s knightly code forbids dishonorable combat, though her definition of “dishonor” is flexible enough to include anything that threatens Iris. She can be reckless, overconfident, and stubborn beyond reason, but her courage is real.
If Iris is the Order’s bullet, Mary is the armor plate screaming back at the trigger.
Abilities / Combat Style
Light Aura
Mary radiates a passive light-bending field that makes everything within her aura harder to hit. Projectiles veer off course, aim falters, and hostile focus naturally shifts toward her.
This effect is both supernatural and psychological. Mary does not merely protect allies by blocking attacks. She makes herself the obvious target.
Bend the Horizon
Through her light manipulation and flash-based tools, Mary can scatter visuals, blind groups, distort angles, and redirect enemy fire. In combat, she turns the battlefield into a stage where every spotlight points back to her.
Her flash array can be shaped into controlled cones of blinding light, allowing her to protect allies while disrupting enemy formations.
Shield Stance
Mary can absorb extreme frontal damage with her shield, holding the line against gunfire, blades, anomaly strikes, and divine weaponry. She believes no blade can strike behind her shield if she is still standing.
This confidence is not always wise.
It is, however, usually justified.
Vow of Protection
Mary’s protective instincts intensify when Iris is harmed. Her light hardens, her movements sharpen, and her defensive output increases.
If Iris dies, Mary’s aura collapses into a state known in restricted files as Darkness. During this state, light around Mary turns dark regardless of brightness, and her normal radiant field becomes something colder, heavier, and far less merciful.
Known History
Mary Light serves the Holy Order of the Divine Light as a defensive combatant and guardian-class field asset. She became known for announcing herself before battle, drawing attention away from vulnerable allies, and surviving attacks that should have broken her formation.
Her bond with Iris defines much of her current role. While the Order views Iris as a sacred clairvoyant asset, Mary views her as a person first. She often places Iris’s safety above orders, mission efficiency, and even her own medical needs.
Reports describe Mary as difficult to discipline, impossible to intimidate, and dangerously effective when Iris is threatened.
Despite her loyalty to the Holy Order, Mary’s faith appears personal rather than institutional. She believes in the Maiden, protection, and the duty of the strong to shield the weak. Whether those beliefs will always align with the Order’s commands remains uncertain.
Role in the Story
Mary Light gives the Holy Order of the Divine Light a heroic face that is not simple villainy. She is loud, faithful, protective, and genuinely brave. Her problem is not that she lacks compassion.
Her problem is that she may be serving a system that knows exactly how to use it.
Where Iris represents obedient prophecy, Mary represents protective faith. She is the shield that refuses to move, even when the battlefield, the Order, or fate itself demands sacrifice.
Her story becomes strongest when her loyalty to Iris clashes with her loyalty to the Holy Order.
Relationships
Iris: Mary’s protected charge, closest companion, and emotional weak point. Mary will ignore orders, injuries, and tactical logic if Iris is in danger.
Holy Order of the Divine Light: Mary serves as a guardian-class combatant and symbol of radiant protection. The Order values her defensive power, though her personal loyalty to Iris may complicate command decisions.
S.C.D.: Mary may operate alongside containment forces when Iris is deployed against anomalies, soulbound targets, or phase-shifted threats.
Vestige Soul: Potential ideological conflict. If Vestige Soul is viewed as a threat by the Order, Mary may oppose him. If Iris hesitates, Mary may become the deciding shield between obedience and doubt.
Related Notes
When Iris collapses mid-mission, Mary often refuses medical aid for herself until Iris is stabilized.
Mary’s Knight’s Code forbids dishonorable combat, but her definition of dishonor changes quickly when Iris is threatened.
When exposed to soulbound light, Mary’s shield shimmered with glyphs not found in any known Holy Order records.
Restricted combat notes describe a state called Darkness, triggered by Iris’s death. In this state, all light around Mary turns dark, suggesting that her power may not be purely radiant in origin.
