Nari

A Rattarian Rune Gear researcher and Office member pursuing magic that can affect or control technology

Overview

Nari is a Rattarian researcher and engineer specializing in Rune Gear Technology. Formerly a high-tier researcher in Riseholm, she is now a member of the Office of Infinite Horizon.

Curious, independent, and mischievous, Nari pursues questions about how technology works and how its limits might be overcome. Her equipment includes a hacking glove that requires physical contact and a leather traveling case with expanded internal storage.

Research in Riseholm

Nari held a high-tier research position in Riseholm, a city where Rune Gear supports transport, industry, workshops, and everyday life. Her technical expertise developed within that setting of enchanted machinery and mechanical invention.

She wanted to research magic capable of affecting Rune Gear Technology, including the possibility of controlling it. That pursuit became problematic during her time in Riseholm.

Her interest concerns the workings and control of technology itself. It extends beyond operating a finished device to investigating how magical intervention might change its behavior.

The Hacking Glove

Nari's glove uses Rune Gear Technology to attempt to brute-force control of other technology. The glove must touch the object she wants to affect.

Physical contact is a requirement for an attempt, rather than a guarantee that it will succeed. The device gives her a technological means of trying to take control, while leaving the result uncertain.

The glove belongs to her equipment-based approach to interference and control. Its operation precedes the technomancy she learns later.

The Leather Traveling Case

Nari carries a leather traveling case with a holding-space function. Its interior provides expanded storage beyond what the case's exterior would ordinarily suggest.

The case is part of her traveling equipment, accompanying an engineer whose work and curiosity extend beyond the research position she once held.

Later Development: Technomancy

Later, Nari learns technomancy. This gives her the magical ability to hack, repair, build, or control electronic systems.

This development follows her earlier reliance on Rune Gear expertise and the hacking glove. Her research ambition and her initial equipment come before the acquisition of that magical ability.

The broader relationships between magical study, mana, and casting are described in Magic and Mana.

The Office of Infinite Horizon

Nari is a member of the Office of Infinite Horizon, an intelligence organization working to prevent the destruction of every Node and preserve the continuity of life within Postremo Limine.

Her membership places a researcher concerned with technology and its control within an organization that combines intelligence work with investigation and intervention.

Personality and Working Style

Nari is confident in her abilities and driven by curiosity. She enjoys unfamiliar technology, difficult problems, and opportunities to experiment. Once a question captures her attention, she is persistent in pursuing it.

Her rebelliousness makes restrictive authority and imposed limits difficult for her to accept. She dislikes being underestimated, manipulated, or having someone else claim credit for her work.

Mischief and sarcasm accompany her technical focus. She enjoys teasing people and listening to music while working, and can use humor to deflect criticism or conceal more private feelings.

Although she values independence and personal space, Nari is loyal to people she comes to regard as friends. Her curiosity draws her toward the unfamiliar, while her awareness of danger gives her reasons to plan carefully.
