Overview
An Arcane Observer is a floating orb of magical energy covered in intricate runes and glyphs. Its surface emits a soft, pulsating glow as it patrols or searches an assigned location.
Its primary purpose is surveillance. An Observer can serve as a sentry or scout, detecting intruders, anomalies, and magical disturbances before reporting what it finds.
Detection and Search
Arcane Observers use detection spells and magical sensors to inspect their surroundings. They can investigate designated locations for intrusion or unauthorized activity and continue monitoring areas of magical importance.
They are deployed in places such as arcane sanctums and libraries. An encounter may therefore indicate that a location is being watched, even when no guard or practitioner is visible nearby.
Communication and Alerts
An Observer can communicate with its master or designated individuals through telepathic messages or magical transmissions. When it detects something of interest, it may send a signal, emit a beacon of light, or return to report.
Its presence is not proof of hostility. The significance of being detected depends on who deployed it, what it was instructed to watch, and how its master responds.
Countermeasures
Its magical nature makes conventional attacks or disruption unreliable. Skilled spellcasters may be able to interfere with its sensors or deceive its surveillance through illusions.
Disrupting or destroying its manifested form may temporarily incapacitate it. That should not be treated as proof that it has been permanently removed or that an alert was never sent.
Place in Postremo Limine
Arcane Observers represent a practical use of magic for security and investigation. Their role differs from predatory entities: an Observer's danger often lies in what learns of an intruder through it.
