Overview
The Captain is a decayed officer encountered within the Great War, a Node trapped in repeating bombardments, charges, and battlefield reconstruction. He wears a tattered uniform and carries a rusted whistle and flare gun.
His presence usually precedes a large surge of undead activity. Where scattered soldiers might otherwise wander or react individually, the Captain brings the threat of coordinated movement.
Whistle Command
The sound of his whistle signals his arrival or influence. Nearby undead begin forming ranks and preparing to charge. For travelers caught in the trenches, the sound is a warning that the battlefield's dead are about to act together.
The full range and limits of this influence are unknown. His command of nearby soldiers does not establish that he controls every undead creature in the Node.
Artillery Marking
The Captain uses his flare gun to mark targets for artillery. This makes him dangerous beyond the immediate reach of the soldiers around him: exposure to his attention may be followed by bombardment.
Encounter Considerations
- Leave the area when a nearby whistle signals an approaching charge.
- Avoid open light during artillery cycles.
- Do not assume a bunker will survive a direct strike.
- Matching an undead faction's uniform may delay aggression, but can also cause the wearer to receive commands.
Identity and Status
The Captain's original name, allegiance, and relationship to the repeating war remain unknown. Whether he retains an individual identity or performs a role sustained by the Node has not been established.
He is recorded separately from ordinary Zombies because of his recognizable equipment and battlefield command behavior.
