Overview
The Crypt Node is a decaying labyrinth of mausoleums, ossuaries, and bone markets built atop layers of failed resurrection and soul decay. Here, life and death blur into one long echo — the air hums with whispers, and even the stones seem to remember pain.
Unlike most Nodes, CN-07 runs on Soulflow residue instead of LimiCore anchors. The result is a permanent death loop — corpses twitch, skeletons wander, and mimic slimes imitate the living. The node breathes like something still trying to wake up.
Those who enter often describe a heavy pull, as if the Node itself resents forgetting the dead. Few come willingly. Fewer leave unchanged.
“It’s not haunted. It’s awake.” — Diver field report, 2nd retrieval team
Environment and Structure
Crypt Node’s surface resembles a sunken grave city, half-drowned in ash fog and fungal light. Bone towers rise where skyscrapers once stood. Beneath lies an endless necropolis — catacombs, ossuaries, blood tunnels, and fungal gardens that breathe in rhythm with the residual Soulflow.
Key Sectors:
- Gravemarket: A skeletal bazaar where Mortuvians and Rattarians trade bones, resin, and fragments of preserved souls.
- Ossuary Core: Heart of the Node, where a shattered Anchor pumps faint red light through rib-like pillars.
- Flesh Mire: A swamp of liquefied corpses, home to slimes and mimic slimes that recycle decay.
- Night Abbey: A cathedral shrouded in vines and bloodlight, ruled by the Vampiric Courts.
- Beast Hollow: Lower caverns haunted by feral werebeasts and bone gnawers.
Rain here smells like rust. Water runs red for reasons no one confirms.
Anomaly Behavior
- Soulflow Residue: The air carries memory. Spoken words echo back hours later in new voices.
- Flesh Reanimation: Dead tissue regrows under moonlight; even detached limbs crawl toward warmth.
- Mimic Residue: Some walls breathe; others whisper names not spoken in centuries.
- Grave Reflections: Mirrors and water surfaces display different realities — often future deaths.
Known Inhabitants
The Crypt Node is more ecosystem than settlement — a self-sustaining network of the living, dead, and something in between.
Mortuvians – Half-dead caretakers and bone traders who maintain the Node’s grave economy.
Nocturans – Shadowborn wanderers, mediators between vampires and Diver travelers.
Papilune – Silent mothkin who drift through the fog, tending to lanterns and recording echoes of the dead.
Rattarians – Scavengers of coffins and wiring, maintaining trade tunnels beneath the Gravemarket.
Formicari – Hive engineers who reinforce necrotic tunnels with resin structures, preventing collapses.
Common undead include skeletons, zombies, mimic slimes, and malformed revenants. Vampires and werebeasts claim the upper sectors as hunting grounds.
“You don’t find life here. You find persistence.” — Mortuvian saying
Entities
- Skeletons: Guard tombs autonomously; may reform after destruction.
- Zombies: Varied intelligence depending on origin Node; some migrate between regions.
- Slimes & Mimic Slimes: Feed on corpse matter, mimic living forms to trap prey.
- Vampires: Rule over Night Abbey; bound by ancient blood pacts and Broker debts.
- Werebeasts: Roam Beast Hollow; obey lunar anomalies that don’t follow real cycles.
Society and Activity
Despite its horrors, CN-07 is a functioning hub for trade, research, and necrotic alchemy.
Its culture is defined by one unspoken law: respect the dead, or join them.
Local Economy:
- Bone resin and necrotic fuel
- Grave fungi and memory-binding spores
- Spirit glass and preserved hearts
- Soul fragments extracted from Ossuary veins
Unwritten Rules:
- Don’t destroy bones — they belong to someone.
- Don’t follow whispers past three turns.
- Don’t light fires in the Flesh Mire.
- Don’t stare into gravewater. It stares back.
Faction Presence
- Black Gate Mercenaries: Occasional retrieval missions; high casualty rates.
- Broker Wolves: Blood-debt contracts with the Vampiric Courts.
- Formicari Sub-Hives: Reinforce tunnels, trade bio-resin for corpse fuel.
- Mortuvian Choirs: Maintain spiritual balance, prevent total collapse of Soulflow cycles.
- Rattarian Smog Guilds: Operate bone filtration and scavenging systems.
Threat Notes
- Avoid silence; it signals reanimation.
- Flashlights distort in fog — use low amber sources.
- Soulflow corruption increases hallucination risk after 8 hours.
- Mimic Slimes have learned to copy Diver speech patterns.
- Never trust someone who doesn’t cast a reflection.
