Choosing a unique name is important for branding, and that does not apply only to VTubers. A good name should be memorable, easy to search for, and distinct enough that people can connect it directly to you.
When I began working on my VTuber identity, I knew I wanted a name that felt familiar to me while still being different from the usernames I had used in the past.
My Older Usernames
A lot of my older usernames involved words such as Knight, Dark, Flame, Death God, or Shinigami.
Yes, I was very into Bleach back in the day.
I was also never the type of person who constantly changed usernames. Once I found something I liked, I usually kept using it for a long time. Because of that, I did not want my VTuber name to feel completely disconnected from the identities I had used online before.
That is where the “Soul” part of Vestige Soul came from.
Soul still carried some of the feeling behind my older Shinigami-related usernames, but it was broad enough to become something of my own. It could connect to death, identity, memory, and whatever remained of a person after everything else had been taken away.
At the time, I did not have every detail of the lore worked out, but “Soul” felt like the right foundation.
Finding the Word Vestige
The first part of the name took more searching.
I wanted a word that represented something broken, lost, or left behind. “Broken Soul” and “Lost Soul” were ideas that matched the mood I was going for, but they also felt too common. I wanted something that carried a similar meaning without sounding like a name that many other people were already using.
That led me to look through less common words and related meanings.
Eventually, I found “vestige.”
A vestige is a remaining trace or fragment of something that once existed. It could be a piece of a forgotten place, a memory of a former identity, or evidence that something had survived even after most of it was gone.
That meaning immediately fit the general atmosphere I wanted.
Vestige was not just broken. It was something that remained.
Making Sure the Name Was Distinct
After finding the name, I searched for it online to see how widely it was already being used.
That was an important part of the process for me. A name can sound unique when you first think of it, but that does not mean someone else is not already using it as a channel name, username, business, or established character.
I wanted people searching for Vestige Soul to be able to find my work rather than getting lost among dozens of unrelated creators using the same name.
The name appeared distinctive enough to build around, so I decided to keep it.
The Name Came Before Most of the Lore
When I chose Vestige Soul, I was not completely sure what the lore would become.
I knew it would be a mixture of things I enjoyed. I liked dark fantasy, science fiction, anime, video games, strange worlds, survival stories, and characters trying to continue after losing something important.
The name and the character were also influenced by the mood I was in at the time. Both carried the feeling of something damaged, lost, or incomplete.
As I continued developing the project, that feeling became a much larger part of Postremo Limine.
The world is filled with discarded souls, broken realities, fragmented memories, abandoned places, and pieces of worlds that no longer exist. People arrive after being separated from much of what once defined them, and they must decide what to do with whatever remains.
Because of that, the name Vestige Soul eventually became more connected to the lore than I originally planned.
It can describe a soul that remains after its former world, history, or identity has been lost. It also represents the idea that something broken does not necessarily have to stay broken.
A fragment can become the beginning of something new.
Would I Choose the Same Name Today?
I am honestly not sure.
If I were starting again today, I would probably follow a similar process. I would look for a name that was uncommon, searchable, and connected to the themes I wanted to explore.
I might consider different words or spend even more time testing possibilities, but I would still want the name to carry the same general feeling.
Vestige Soul reflects both where I came from online and the direction the project eventually took. It connects my older usernames to the world I am building now, even though I did not understand the full meaning when I first chose it.
Sometimes a name begins with a carefully planned meaning.
Other times, you choose a name because it feels right, and the meaning grows around it later.
For Vestige Soul, it was a little of both.
