Abysmal Abyss

Luminous life and ancient ruins in a cavern Node bound to its twin

Overview

The Abysmal Abyss is a cavern Node in Postremo Limine. Winding tunnels, immense chambers, hidden crevices, and treacherous chasms form its subterranean landscape. Damp stone and luminous organisms shape the experience of moving through its depths.

It is the twin of Shadowbloom Forest. The two Nodes always appear as a pair, and if either is destroyed, the other follows.

The Lighting Rule

The Abyss has no natural daylight under its own Node rule. Bioluminescent flora and fauna provide ambient illumination within the otherwise dark landscape.

Phosphorescent moss grows on cavern walls and ceilings, while luminous fungi emerge from the rocky floor. Their glow reveals portions of the surrounding stone without giving the whole environment a uniform light.

This establishes the Node's ambient lighting. The behavior of carried lamps, flames, and magical light remains unspecified.

Tunnels, Caverns, and Chasms

The Abyss is a labyrinth of winding passages and immense underground spaces. Some tunnels open into cathedral-like chambers whose scale makes their extent difficult to judge.

Steep precipices and hidden crevices are concrete dangers to travelers. The cavern terrain can make a passage hazardous even before its inhabitants are encountered.

Its depths belong to the Abysmal Abyss itself. They do not establish that this Node sits physically beneath Shadowbloom Forest or forms the bottom of another world.

Inhabitants

Large trapdoor spiders, cow-sized pill bugs, and humanoid fungus folk inhabit both the Abyss and Shadowbloom Forest.

Fungus glow crabs and living roots are additional inhabitants of the Abyss. Their specific abilities and behavior have not been established.

Dark Elves also inhabit its subterranean environment. Their presence here does not establish that the Abyss is the homeland of every Dark Elf in Postremo Limine.

Ancient Remains and Exploration

Relics and remains of ancient civilizations occur within the Abyss. Their origins are uncertain, with accounts of them entangled in myth and legend.

Explorers are drawn to the underground remains and the possibility of finding valuable objects or knowledge. The winding passages, chasms, hidden crevices, and subterranean inhabitants make those journeys dangerous.

Its Twin: Shadowbloom Forest

The Abysmal Abyss and Shadowbloom Forest are separate Nodes. They always appear as a pair, and the destruction of one leads to the destruction of the other.

Their shared spiders, pill bugs, and fungus folk connect their ecosystems, while their landscapes and other inhabitants differ. Shadowbloom remains in perpetual dusk and contains large mantises; the Abyss contains dark caverns, fungus glow crabs, living roots, and Dark Elves.

The twin bond's mechanism and the time between their destructions remain unknown. Its exact entrances and crossings have not been established. Travel Between Nodes describes the wider rules governing passage through edges.

Place Among Nodes

The Abyss combines a cavern environment and persistent lighting rule with a rare bond to another Node's survival. See Nodes for the broader systems of Postremo Limine.
