Central Authority

A council-founded refuge authority whose scientific legacy outlived its collapse.

Overview

The Central Authority was a council-founded institution built around exceptionally large Lasting Natural Refuges in Postremo Limine. Its first purpose was to protect those refuges and the people who depended on them.

Protection gave it a foundation. Scientific research gave it a vision of the future.

As its society developed, wealth, power, and knowledge divided its population into upper and lower classes. The Authority became a center of research and early Safe Zone development, with Caldre Voxis and Virell Thalrik among its most important architects.

The Collapse destabilized the Authority’s home Node and spread Errare through its Safe Zone and surrounding territory. Virell’s faction departed, and other groups saw an opportunity to govern themselves through LimiCore-powered infrastructure. The Central Authority fragmented and ceased to exist as a unified power.

Its founding refuges remain as ruins within an unstable Node that, for unknown reasons, does not collapse.

Foundation and Governing Council

Most natural refuges were too scarce and limited in capacity to support a large population. The refuges around which the Central Authority formed were exceptional: they were much larger than the natural sanctuaries previously encountered.

Their size made organized settlement possible on an unusual scale. A council founded the Central Authority to protect the refuges and coordinate the society growing within them.

Its authority began with a practical responsibility. The protected territory was valuable, and the people living there depended on its continued safety.

Protection and Scientific Expansion

The Authority’s ambitions expanded from protecting its existing refuges to exploring what science could make possible.

Natural protection was limited to the places where it already existed. Constructed Safe Zones offered the possibility of establishing habitable territory elsewhere, resisting Node corruption and attempts to rewrite a location while protecting residents from hostile entities.

Caldre Voxis and Virell Thalrik worked within the Authority during this development. Their partnership advanced stabilization, energy routing, boundary theory, and early Safe Zone infrastructure.

Their purposes differed. Caldre emphasized dependable protection and continued survival. Virell regarded stabilization as temporary support for the pursuit of escape.

Their work became part of a wider change: protected settlements no longer had to depend entirely on the few lasting natural refuges available. The Rise of Safe Zones explores that transition and its effects on ordinary life.

Class Division

Wealth, power, and knowledge shaped the division between upper and lower classes.

Wealth affected access to resources. Power affected influence over decisions. Knowledge affected a person’s ability to understand and participate in the scientific systems shaping the Authority’s future.

These advantages were not the same, but they could reinforce one another. People with resources, influence, or specialized understanding held opportunities that others did not.

The society that formed around shared protection became unequal. Living within the same refuge did not mean having the same position within it.

The Collapse and Fragmentation

The final escape experiment associated with Caldre and Virell destabilized the existing Safe Zone network. Caldre closed the gate from which Errare was emerging. The full extent of the damage the incident could have caused remains unknown. Virell disappeared in the aftermath.

The destruction of the Collapse weakened the Central Authority’s infrastructure and the foundations of its rule.

Errare infected part of the population, and those infected attempted to spread it. Attempts were made to isolate the city center by sealing its access gates. These containment gates were separate from the source gate Caldre closed.

The Authority established its government elsewhere. Relocation was followed by accusations and mutual blame, adding internal conflict to the damage and displacement it had already suffered.

Virell Thalrik’s faction left. Other factions also concluded that the Authority was no longer necessary: LimiCores, combined with stabilization systems such as Limi-Anchors, gave them the means to establish protected territories of their own.

The breakup therefore had both a destructive and a political cause. The Authority had suffered a catastrophe, and groups that once depended on it could now pursue independence.

The technology developed within its society helped make that independence possible.

Virell’s faction and Virell himself remain distinct parts of this history. The faction’s departure does not resolve his fate after his disappearance.

Founding Refuges and Present Remains

The Lasting Natural Refuges on which the Authority was founded still exist, but they lie in ruins.

The Node containing them is unstable. Despite that instability, it does not collapse. The reason remains unknown.

Errare is reportedly dormant in the affected territory, but most people avoid deliberately touching it. The bright light and brief darkness were part of the original incident; the contamination and unstable ruins remain its legacy.

The survival of the territory and the fall of its government are separate facts. The Authority’s unified power ended, while its founding landscape endured.

The ruins preserve the setting of its history: a society founded on protection, expanded through research, divided by unequal access to wealth, power, and knowledge, and broken by catastrophe and separation.

Universal Credit System

The Central Authority created a universal credit system that continues to be used after its fragmentation. It was designed so that Nodes are very unlikely to generate valid credits.

Each universal credit coin stores data about where it has been, but how that storage works and who now maintains the currency are unknown. Known scanners can read the coins. A blank history may indicate a fake, although rumors suggest someone is still producing them. Their supply is believed to be limited.

Some factions accept universal credits directly or use them, alongside gold, as backing for their own currencies. See Currency and Trade for coins, local currencies, exchanges, and merchant payments. Their place in everyday settlement life is described in Life Within Safe Zones.

Legacy

The Central Authority survives in the consequences of its work rather than as a functioning unified institution.

Early stabilization research contributed to the systems used by constructed Safe Zones. Caldre’s containment work became foundational to the modern system, while Virell’s pursuit of escape left a disputed and dangerous legacy.

Its fragmentation helped establish a world in which independent groups could control their own protected territories.

The Authority’s history connects two questions that still shape Postremo Limine: who controls safety, and what people can do once they no longer depend on that control.
