Overview
The Collapse was the catastrophe associated with the final escape experiment of Caldre Voxis and Virell Thalrik.
Its full destructive potential remains unknown. The damage it did cause left the Central Authority with an unstable home Node, contaminated territory, infection among its residents, and a government forced to relocate.
The incident began with reports of a bright light followed by brief, complete darkness at the center of the Safe Zone. After the darkness, a gate was reported. It was the source of Errare.
Caldre himself closed that gate.
The source was sealed, but the disaster’s consequences remained.
The Authority Before the Incident
The Central Authority had been founded by a council around exceptionally large Lasting Natural Refuges. Protection was its original purpose; scientific research later expanded its ambitions.
Within its society, wealth, power, and knowledge divided the upper and lower classes. Caldre and Virell contributed to stabilization research and early constructed Safe Zone infrastructure, while pursuing the possibility of escape from Postremo Limine.
Their work took place before the Collapse. Protected settlements already existed when the final experiment failed.
Bright Light, Darkness, and the Gate
Accounts of the incident describe a bright light followed by complete darkness at the Safe Zone’s center.
The darkness was brief. It was part of the incident, rather than a permanent condition covering the city center.
Afterward, there were reports of a gate. Errare came from this gate and covered the Safe Zone and surrounding areas within the Node.
Caldre closed the source gate himself, sealing the opening from which Errare was emerging.
How much further damage the event could have caused remains unknown.
Errare and the Infected Population
Errare can appear as a goo-like substance and cause glitch-like visuals. During the Collapse, it infected part of the population.
Those infected attempted to spread the infection.
The danger therefore extended beyond contamination of the location. Infected residents also became a threat to others, prompting attempts to isolate the city center by sealing its access gates.
These city gates served a different purpose from the gate Caldre closed. Closing the source gate addressed the origin of Errare; sealing access to the center was an attempt to contain the infection already present.
Relocation and Political Fragmentation
The Central Authority had to establish its government elsewhere.
Relocation was followed by accusations and mutual blame. The institution founded to protect its refuges now faced the loss of its former center and disagreements over responsibility for the disaster.
Virell Thalrik’s faction departed. Other factions also concluded that they no longer needed the Central Authority. LimiCore-powered stabilization gave them the means to establish protected territories independently.
Destruction, displacement, internal conflict, and faction departures broke the Authority’s unified rule.
Virell himself disappeared in the aftermath of the experiment. His faction’s departure does not resolve his personal fate.
The Ruins Today
The Authority’s founding natural refuges still exist, but they lie in ruins.
Their Node remains unstable and, for unknown reasons, does not collapse.
Errare is now said to be dormant. That is a reported condition, not proof that it has become harmless. Most people will not go out of their way to touch it.
The brief darkness ended. The ruined territory, destabilization, and consequences of the infection endured.
Historical Significance
The Collapse changed both the Authority’s home and the political structure built around it.
Caldre’s recorded intervention closed the source gate. The government relocated, struggled with internal division, and eventually fragmented as factions pursued independence.
The Rise of Safe Zones describes the development of constructed protection before and after this disaster. The Collapse marks the point at which that history became inseparable from infection, displacement, and the fall of the Central Authority.
